How to Link Nether Portals in Minecraft Without Mistakes

The Secret to Connecting Nether Portals

If you've ever built a Nether portal in Minecraft and, upon returning, ended up in a dark cave hundreds of blocks away from your base, you are not alone. Portal linking is one of the most useful mechanics, but also one of the most confusing for players.

In this comprehensive guide, we will explain how the block ratio works between the Overworld and the Nether, and how to use our calculator to ensure a perfect connection every single time.

The 8-to-1 Rule

The fundamental concept behind the Nether is the distance scaling factor. Every 1 block traveled in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld.

This means that:

  • If you want to travel 800 blocks in the normal world, you only need to walk 100 blocks in the Nether.
  • This ratio applies to the X and Z axes. Height (Y) works on a 1:1 scale, but plays a crucial tie-breaking role for nearby connections.

How to calculate coordinates manually

To find where the corresponding portal in the Nether should be built:

  1. Go to your portal in the Overworld.
  2. Stand in the center of the portal and write down the $X$, $Y$, and $Z$ coordinates (press F3 in Java Edition).
  3. Divide the $X$ and $Z$ coordinates by 8 (rounding to the nearest whole number). The $Y$ coordinate remains the same.
  4. Enter the Nether, go to the new calculated coordinates $(X/8, Y, Z/8)$ and build your portal there.

Using the Minepax Nether Calculator

Doing division math while running away from creepers or ghasts is not ideal. That's why we created a dedicated tool.

With our Nether Calculator, you just need to enter the coordinates of your initial portal and it will instantly do all the math for you, showing the exact coordinates for both going from the Overworld to the Nether and vice versa.

Advanced Positioning Tips

1. Beware of the 128-block search radius

When you enter a portal, the game searches for an active portal within a 128-block radius in the destination world. If it finds one, it teleports you there. If it doesn't, it generates a new portal. This means that two Overworld portals less than 1024 blocks apart might end up connecting to the same Nether portal if you don't position them exactly at the correct coordinates.

2. Height (Y Axis) as a tie-breaker

If you have portals very close to each other, the game will choose the portal with the shortest straight 3D distance. Matching the height ($Y$) of your Nether portal to the exact height of the Overworld portal helps prevent unwanted cross-connections.
