Minecraft Nether biomes and what to expect in each

Which biome your portal drops you into changes everything on the other side — from surrounded by hostile piglins to nearly empty. Here's the quick reference before you step through.

The five biomes

| Biome | % of the Nether | Terrain | Mobs | What to expect | |---|---|---|---|---| | Nether Wastes | 36% | netherrack, glowstone on the ceiling, gravel and soul sand along the coast | ghast, piglin, zombified piglin, magma cube, strider | the most common biome — this is probably where your portal lands | | Crimson Forest | 22% | giant crimson fungi, red nylium, weeping vines | hoglin, piglin, zombified piglin, strider | the only biome where hoglins spawn naturally | | Warped Forest | 9% | warped fungi, blue nylium, twisting vines | only endermen and striders | the calmest biome in the Nether — neither piglins nor hoglins spawn here | | Soul Sand Valley | 17% | soul sand, soul soil, fossils, basalt pillars | ghast, skeleton, occasional enderman | blue fog; the only biome with dried ghasts | | Basalt Deltas | 16% | basalt and blackstone, rough terrain, lava pools | high-density magma cubes, ghast | no piglins or hoglins; good for magma cream farming |

Where not to dig, regardless of biome

  • Y=123 to Y=127: the ceiling bedrock band. It isn't a single flat line — it's an uneven five-block-thick band, and the safe route just underneath it sits around Y=120–122.
  • Y≤31: the level where the Nether's lava sea starts showing up, in any biome.

If your coordinate conversion lands above 122, check it in the Nether calculator before digging blind — it flags when the result is close to the ceiling.

Why this matters before you build

If you want a quiet base near the portal, Warped Forest is the safest biome in the Nether: no piglins or hoglins spawn there, leaving just endermen and striders, neither hostile by default toward a player standing still. Crimson Forest and Nether Wastes both guarantee piglins nearby, so you can trade gold for loot without traveling far. Basalt Deltas has the highest magma cube density in the game, which makes it the most efficient biome for magma cream farming, but also the riskiest one to build a permanent structure in.

Common mistakes

My portal landed in a different biome than I expected — is that normal? Yes. The Nether-side biome depends only on the coordinate, with no relationship to the Overworld biome you left from. An Overworld forest can open into a Soul Sand Valley on the other side without any contradiction.

Can I know the biome before crossing? Not without mods or debug commands — there's no Overworld-side indicator for which Nether biome corresponds to your coordinates. The only way is to calculate the coordinate and cross over to check.

Why don't hoglins spawn in Warped Forest? It's a spawn rule tied to the biome itself — hoglins only spawn in Crimson Forest, no exceptions. If you need hoglin leather or meat, you have to go there specifically.

What's a "dried ghast" in Soul Sand Valley? A ghast variant that generates stuck in soul sand blocks, exclusive to that biome — different from a regular ghast, which flies freely in any Nether biome.

Is Basalt Deltas safe for a large base? It has the roughest terrain in the Nether, full of lava pools hidden between basalt blocks. You can build there, but it's worth leveling the ground first instead of assuming solid footing in every direction.
